Artist Statement

Drawn as I am to all things old, this body of work was inspired by a recent museum tour of London and Paris. I was struck by the lack of jewellery in the collections, which is largely due to the tradition of recycling heirlooms, gems removed, sometimes re-cut, precious metal thrown into the melting pot to be made into something more contemporary. One might say that it is the responsible thing to do in this age of reduce, reuse, recycle. For me the sentimental preservation of history exists alongside the desire for individuality. I came to realize working on these pieces that along with a past there comes an energy, a kind of magic that can be felt in the making. By incorporating discarded old treasures I am practicing the three R's alongside the belief that in order for society to move forward we must pay homage to and preserve what has been learned and cherished before us. It's up to us to keep the magic alive.
