Artist Statement

I based this piece on an East Indian myth about Lakshmi the Goddess of good fortune. The story tells of a beautiful pearl necklace that was stolen by a raven from a queen and recovered by a washerwoman. Upon returning the necklace to the grateful King the washerwoman requested that she be the sole person allowed to light candles during the Festival of Lights honouring Lakshmi. The Goddess, pleased by the womens devotion agreed to stay for seven generations guaranteeing good fortune and prosperity for the washerwomans family.
