"I Close My Eyes To See" - Paul Gauguin

Many of us have spent a great deal of time searching for an answer to the seemingly simple question of who we are. There is a lot of media and literary attention given to this question to the point where self-discovery has become a business in itself. Ironically the majority of this outside help directs us to a fundamental point, the answer lies within. Once we latch on to this concept and truly look within ourselves there is an excitement as we open the outer surface and look inside.

I have chosen the locket as a representation of this opening. The hard outer layer is beautiful yet almost impenetrable as if it most securely protects what is inside. The hidden passage I close my eyes to see represents how in order to truthfully see ourselves we must shut out the distractions of the world. The locket is fashioned to symbolize that our body is our temple and what is on the inside is spiritual. Along with the phrase there is a pearl inside that represents the pearl of wisdom that is inside of us all.
